Dessì was born in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy in 1952 and took to making masks at a young age. He studied at the Turin Academy of Art and had his first exhibition, Totem and Mask, at Turin’s Gold Square Gallery in 1973. A few years later, he opened his own workshop in Florence. Since then, Dessì has devoted himself to the art of mask-making, creating revolutionary designs and experimenting with new materials. His mask designs were used in the 1988 film La Maschera (The Mask). Four of Dessì’s masks will be worn on Gala night by models from MeJeanne Couture and six total masks will be up for individual bid in the silent auction. Marty and Anne Riske of Fargo, personal friends of Dessì, donated the masks.
