Piehl loves bucking horses and bulls and, since he doesn’t raise them, he paints them. His sweetheart of the rodeo series began decades ago and although it has undergone many technical and stylistic changes, the concept of the work has remained constant. The bucking horse, embellished through expressionistic techniques, is the sweetheart of the rodeo. Piehl is a professor of art at Minot State University.
He was awarded an Enduring Visions Fellowship by the Bush Foundation in 2009.
