Andrea Carlson: VORE

September 10, 2010 - January 16, 2011 William and Anna Jane Schlossman Gallery, General Exhibition

Plains Art Museum presents a debut exhibition of a series of works entitled VORE by Andrea Carlson. This exhibition offers audiences the opportunity to view 16 large works in Carlson’s latest series reflecting on narratives, cultural relations, and power. All works are mixed media on paper.

Carlson shows prodigious talent for combining complex ideas with agile, compelling visual compositions that mix representation with abstraction, acrylic and oil paint with watercolor, gouache, pen and ink, graphite and colored pencil. Begun in 2009, VORE uses the idea of cannibalism metaphorically to address ideas about cultural consumption, cultural exchange and appropriation.

Carlson was born in Minnesota and currently resides in Minneapolis. In 2003 she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2005. Visit Andrea’s website at mikinaak.com.
