As a child growing up in the Deep South, Jefferson developed his artistic sensibility as he absorbed the cultural tensions of that time. Maskomorphosis was conceived during a visit to a gallery in Washington, DC. While looking at African masks, Jefferson was inspired at how they all seem to blend through the use of vibrant colors and shapes.
