Modern Spirit: The Art of George Morrison

June 16, 2013 - September 1, 2013 William and Anna Jane Schlossman Gallery, Fred J. Donath Memorial Gallery, General Exhibition

Throughout a career that took him from Chippewa City, Minnesota to New York and Paris, George Morrison developed an aesthetic that proved to be an essential part in Modernism and Abstract Expressionism. It was during this time that Morrison made a place for himself within the canon of this critical period in American art, befriending other prominent artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning along the way. After returning to the United States, Morrison continued to create and exhibit his work on the East Coast, a period of time which also included a prominent teaching position at the Rhode Island School of Design. He made his way back to Minnesota, where he taught at the University of Minnesota and eventually returned to the North Shore area to retire from teaching and to focus on artmaking. Despite the faraway places to which his work took him, his imagery and sculptures commonly take as a point of reference the horizon line of the Midwestern landscape, particularly Lake Superior. The Plains Art Museum celebrates this illustrious career by partnering with the Minnesota Museum of American Art and Arts Midwest to organize this exhibit, which spans Morrison’s entire career. Our Museum is the first in a list of prominent institutions throughout the country to feature the largest retrospective of his work, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York City and the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Ariz. Join us as we celebrate the inaugural voyage of this pivotal artist’s work.
