Michael Strand, Fargo craftivist and head of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University, is engaging in a proactive project to invite U.S. senators to cut through the barriers to conversation and share a cup of coffee across the aisle. During the FMVA Studio Crawl, Strand will hold a two-day series of drop-in discussions at Plains Art Museum to gather community input on the design of two distinct sets of cups and saucers, one for Democrats and one for Republicans.
In mid-January 2015, individuals from all 50 states will deliver packages to their respective senators, each containing a cup that is designed for the senator’s party with an unmatched saucer from the “other” party. Senators will be asked to share in conversation with someone not in their party and then swap saucers. In the end, the completed set becomes a gentle reminder of the potential of human-scaled dialogue.
