Exhibition Premise: Emerging Visions (EV) is Plains Art Museum’s first juried exhibition for contemporary art by Native American artists in the region, presenting a survey of media and styles and identifying emerging talent. The exhibition will be an important career builder for emerging artists and help to identify promising talent in the region.
Exhibition Juror: Plains Art Museum is pleased to announce the juror for EV, Hapistinna Graci Horne. Horne is a multi-media artist, specializing in watercolor, acrylic, installation art and poetry, and is a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota and Hunkpapa Lakota Nation. She was born and raised in Minnesota. Horne earned her bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In the spring of 2015, she became the Director/Curator of All My Relations Gallery in Minneapolis.
Submission Guidelines: To submit, please send a completed “Emerging Visions Submission Form” and 1 digital image to firstname.lastname@example.org by September 30, 2015. Artists may submit up to 2 artworks (1 submission per form and 1 image per submission). Diptychs, triptychs, and suites/series are classified as 1 submission. Please note that the juror will review submissions blindly and will make selections based on the strength of the artwork.
Artwork Specifications: EV is open to artists living in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Submissions must conform to the following specifications:
- Created in 2010 or later
- Artworks must be ready to hang and fully assembled
- Works on paper must be framed
- Installations must come with assembly instructions or artist must be present for install
- Maximum size of 2D artworks: 7’H x 7’W
- Maximum size of 3D artworks: 7’H x 3’W x 3’D
- Artworks previously exhibited at Plains Art Museum will not be accepted.
Notification of Acceptance: Artists will be notified on November 27, 2015 via email about their acceptance into Emerging Visions. Selected artists must be able to hand-deliver or ship their artwork to Plains Art Museum during the following days/times: December 7-12 and 14-19, 2015 from 10 AM to 4 PM. The Museum is closed on Sundays and will not accept deliveries on this day. Selected artists will receive a stipend of $50 for covering the cost of shipping both to and from the Museum. Detailed shipping instructions will be included with the notice of acceptance.
Awards: In addition to selecting the artworks for display in the exhibition, the juror will also select the following awards:
- First Place: $250
- Second Place: $150
- Third Place: $75
- Honorable Mentions: juror’s discretion
Insurance: Plains Art Museum will insure artworks on its premises during the exhibition period only. Artists are responsible for insuring their artworks during transit to and from the Museum.
Sales: Plains Art Museum does not participate in the sale of artwork, but will forward messages from interested parties to the artists.
