Extreme Landscapes
Recommended for students grade 4-12
Focusing on permanent collection artist, Loraine E. Berger
Using a modified “Extreme Paintbrush” with a longer handle, create a landscape painting in the style of famous Impressionists like Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh. This is a relaxing fail-safe experience that will emphasize color, texture, and unity.
BIG Color with Frank Big Bear
Recommended for students grades 5-9
Swirling patterns and varieties in design make our surroundings come alive! Frank Big Bear is a local artist born in Detroit Lakes, MN and makes art in BIG color about his family, culture, and identity. This experience will use 2D media: colored pencils, watercolor pencils and markers and emphasize principles of shape, pattern and rhythm.
Engraved Plate Printmaking
Recommended for students grades 4-12
Focusing on steamroller prints by Xavier Tavera and Maria Cristina Tavera
Create a printmaking plate using Styrofoam and (dull pencil) then ‘pull prints’ and learn correctly label a printmaking series. This experience will emphasize line, shape, and contrast.
Intentionally Accidental: Expressive Painting
Recommended for students Preschool- 12
Focusing on permanent collection artists, John Seery and Charles Clough
Using sand, natural materials, splattered and poured paint, (or water-soluble oil pastels) learn the creative process of Abstract Expressionist painting, like the work of Jackson Pollock. This experience will focus on color, composition, and movement.
Painting with Organic Materials and Stains
Recommended for students grades K-12
Focusing on permanent collection artist, Helen Frankenthaler
Experiment with texture and color while creating an organic painting. You will work with natural dyes from flowers, berries, and tea leaves, and add texture to the work using seeds and yarn for an all-natural creation.
Textures of Nature
Recommended for students of all ages
Focusing on permanent collection artists, Carl Oltevedt, Charles Nelson Beck
Use collected natural materials to make art about our environment. Learn composition and design while experimenting with texture to create texture prints.
Be a Star
Recommended for students of all ages
Be inspired by father-son duo Pat Kruse and Gage Kruse’s My Brother’s Blanket, Andy Goldsworthy’s Early Morning Calm, and an original native star quilt to create a work of art using radial balance and symmetry.
