Past Exhibitions

With rare exceptions, art objects are created to be experienced visually. The Other Four is an exhibition experience that negates the visually dominant art experience hierarchy by presenting artwork designed specifically to engage the other four senses.

North Carolina-based artist Kurt Perschke’s acclaimed work, the RedBall Project, is a 15 foot sculptural installation traveling around the world, adopting cities as its canvas. Through a simple act of imagination, Perschke squeezes and places the RedBall in imaginative locations to draw attention to our built environment and history, and disrupt our daily routines.

Exploring the ways in which senses alter experience and perception, emerging artist Liza Sylvestre’s work operates at the intersection of our senses and communication.

Waasamoo-Beshizi (Power-Lines) is inspired by the parallel electric power lines that look like dresses and celebrates the connections we have to each other and the intergenerational passage of knowledge.

Fargo-based artist Kent Kapplinger is known for his methodical, layered approach to image making. The serial image Beautiful Recollection: The Changing Seasons and Northern Light records and honors the sharing of one’s life experiences with one-another.

Local printmaker Anna Johnson works with a variety of media, from watercolor, ink, and collage to various printmaking techniques, to create layers that document her creative process.

The North Dakota Human Rights Arts Festival is a traveling exhibition that welcomes 2D, 3D, and live performance artists to explore human rights as defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Geneva Conventions and additional Protocols and other similar declarations and treaties.

Each year, Fargo Moorhead Visual Artists (FMVA) presents the Studio Crawl, a popular, free event that gives the community access to professional artists’ studios. The Studio Crawl is an opportunity for people to meet artists, see demonstrations, and purchase their work.

Teaching artists are at the heart of Plains Art Museum. These passionate community arts educators lead a variety of programs– from school tours and art experiences to advanced adult classes.

This exhibition celebrates the vision, ingenuity, and talent of North Dakota award-winning teen artists and writers. Since 2015 Plains Art Museum and the Red River Valley Writing Project have partnered to serve as the state affiliate for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Since 2011, a group of emerging and professional artists has met weekly at the Plains Art Museum and our Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity for a painting class led by one of Fargo’s most prominent and ambitious abstract painters, Marjorie Schlossman.

Architecture for the Birds is a popular annual exhibition in partnership with the North Dakota State University Department of Architecture & Landscape Architecture. The work is the result of a design challenge posed to participating students: to design and build a birdhouse based on the work of a Pritzker-Award-winning architect.
