Past Exhibitions

Since 2011, a group of emerging and professional artists has met weekly at the Plains Art Museum and our Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity for a painting class led by one of Fargo’s most prominent and ambitious abstract painters, Marjorie Schlossman.

In her latest series, Civility is for the Birds, local artist Mackenzie Kouba uses satire in richly layered, colorful compositions to illustrate some of today’s most relevant societal concerns. Kouba’s work is realized with a variety of materials – from oil paint on canvas to collage and assemblage.

The Horse Nation of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ explores how horses have shaped the history, spirituality, and culture of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota people of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ or Seven Council Fires.

If one looks closely and listens carefully, works of art can ask important questions that elicit understanding of our world. For example, what societal factors influence how an artist depicts another person?

“The Mad Scientist of Music,” a modern-day John Cage, and provocative integrator of art forms, Mark Applebaum masterfully crafts intricate visual artworks of signs and symbols that can also be interpreted and played by musicians.

Front and Center is an exhibition of photographs selected from Plains Art Museum’s permanent collection highlighting some of these works

Artworks in the exhibition explore the relationship between order and disorder, as well as individuality and collectivity. The selected works utilize an array of printmaking techniques culminating from each artist’s time spent in this regional print studio.

Regalia is an exhibition highlighting the work of Linda Whitney in Plains Art Museum’s Mothers of Invention exhibition series. Mothers of Invention celebrates Midwest women whose artwork deserves greater critical review and elevated art museum audiences.

Recent Work from Hannaher’s Inc. Print Studio is an exhibition in the Museum’s atrium containing pieces from the artists who have participated in the exchange of creating collaboratively in the print studio.

Wonderlust is an immersive experience: a mixed media installation intended to take the viewer on a trip through the imagination and back to the childhood realm of impossible worlds.

Through this translation, Faulkner explores the relationship between the production of architecture and the production of high-fire ceramics, sparking a dialogue on scale, form, materiality, and function between the two media.

Fritz Scholder (Luiseño / European, 1937 – 2005), was one of the 20th century’s most important and provocative artists. His abstracted figural style, iconoclastic imagery, and complicated legacy have influenced the work of several contemporary Northern Plains Native American artists.

This annual exhibition celebrates the vision, ingenuity, and talent of North Dakota teen artists. Starting in 2014, the Red River Valley Writing Project and the Plains Art Museum partnered to serve as the state affiliate for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

This year’s College Print Exchange includes the seven regional universities that have historically participated in this annual exchange: Minnesota State University Moorhead, North Dakota State University, Concordia College, University of Manitoba, Minot State University, and Valley City State University.
