Awash in Sound: The Flute and Space

October 03, 2019, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Inspired by the unique acoustics in the Plains Art Museum’s third floor Gallery, Dr. Tiana Grise was moved to commission a solo flute composition from New York-based composer Geoff Gersh and to explore the resonant aesthetic of the gallery and the timbre of the flute within the space. This recital is possible thanks to a grant from The Arts Partnership and will consist of 45 minutes of continuous solo flute, ending in the newly composed work by New York musician and composer Geoff Gersh. In addition, the program will include two works by composers that Grise has worked with and knows well; Grand Forks composer Christopher Gable, and an unheard work by world-renowned composer David Maslanka. Audience members are encouraged to move about within the space – even to come and go from the gallery as they please. This program is presented in conjunction with Plains Art Museum’s exhibition The Other Four and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Tiana Grisé is a professional flutist who resides in Moorhead, MN. She teaches flute at MSUM, and is the Executive Director of the Fargo Moorhead Area Youth Symphonies.
