“For the past several years I have been exploring notions of identity and behavior within Latino culture through the creation of archetypes and settings where specific actions take place. This specific work is based on the combination of 16mm digitized films. I compare the illusion of movement produced by a strip of film projected through light to the illusion of cultural identity. The idea of culture is often a fabricated idea of what we believe is culture. Culture, an entity in motion, is always evolving, imitating, recreating, and reproducing itself. My research analyzes the current evolution of a particular culture whose themes have a universal resonance with other cultures and communities.” – Xavier Tavera

Tavera’s artwork is on view in La Línea: 22 Years of Grupo Soap del Corazón.

For more than five decades, Rimer Cardillo’s artwork has offered a powerful commentary on the intersection of politics, economics, and ecological degradation. Since the late 1970s, his practice has focused on the devastating impacts of human activity on the natural world, particularly the alarming decline in animal species and plant life.
