Continuity of Culture

July 28, 2022 - February 26, 2023

Fred Donath Jr. Memorial Gallery

Plains Art Museum, in partnership with Crow’s Shadow Institute for the Arts, is honored to bring Continuity of Culture. This exhibition will highlight prints from Crow’s Shadow’s permanent collection in conversation with Indigenous objects from Plains Art Museum’s permanent collection. Pairing these artworks brings layers of complex narratives across time and space, reinforcing contemporary Indigenous existence. Despite Indigenous People’s historical (dis)placement by modern society, the historic items from the collection were created by contemporary people of their day, and these artworks still serve the same function within Indigenous culture today as it did ten, fifty, to over a century ago. Prints by contemporary artists Marie Watt, Wendy Red Star, Jeffrey Gibson, Raven Chacon and many more reflect the continuity of culture, it’s cultural items and art, but also a need for contemporary artists to express themselves as individuals.

This exhibition is made possible through support from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

No Time For Despair

To say that right now is the ideal time to make art that speaks directly to the people about social justice is an understatement. Because the very nature of art is to undertake or assume the role of a healer by shading light on the human condition.
